Nestlé Purina, which operates a manufacturing facility in South Whitehall Township, reached its 2020 goal to achieve zero waste for disposal across all manufacturing operations and its corporate headquarters.
Achieving zero waste means that all 21 of Purina’s manufacturing sites and its headquarters in St. Louis have innovated to recycle, reuse, recover or compost waste from daily operations instead of disposing of it. Some forms of waste materials can be used as soil amendments on farms that grow grains used in Purina’s pet foods.
Others are converted to methane, which is then captured to fuel carbon-neutral energy.
“I am incredibly proud of the effort it took to accomplish this goal of being zero waste across our operations and product development,” said John Bear, vice president of manufacturing. “This achievement is a testament to the passion and commitment of our more than 8,000 employees across the country who are working to create a better world for us to share with our pets.”
Purina is working toward a global goal for zero environmental impact at all of its operations by 2030, said Gopi Sandhu, director of sustainable operations.
“Pet lovers care about how their pets’ food and litter are made, and that it’s done in a responsible way,” Sandhu said. “We couldn’t agree more.”
Nestlé Purina celebrated 60 years of manufacturing in the Lehigh Valley in 2018 when it undertook an expansion project at the South Whitehall location. The company was previously owned by ALPO, which built the facility on Pope Road in 1958.
