To build a better company, leaders need to start with building the best team.

To build a better company, leaders need to start with building the best team.

That’s the advice from the leaders of some of the top 100 privately held companies in the Greater Lehigh Valley.

A company needs a diverse roster of players who bring unique skills to the team and great coaches who know how to bring those players together to win their corporate goals – gold medals, if you will.

Companies can do that by smart hiring, strong management and employee engagement.

“You have to value all types of employees,” said Joe Scott, president of Easton Coach Inc., Forks Township.

Scott acknowledged his company, which provides contracted paratransit and shuttle services throughout the region, is not a glamorous one. Some children instead may dream of growing up to be world-class Olympic athletes, such as those who competed in Brazil the past two weeks.

“If you asked all 660 of the people working here – including me – none of us would have said, ‘When we grow up, we want to be working for Easton Coach,’ ” Scott said.

But keeping those employees engaged is important so they become part of a winning team, in effect earning gold medals for the company.

Managers need to get people to work together and stay positive about their jobs even on tough days – and there are always going to be tough days.

“The goal is to maximize their strengths and minimize faults while preparing them for the things they may face during their day,” he said.
