Approximately 460 jobs are being eliminated with the closure of Wells Fargo’s call center in Bethlehem.
Spokesman Jim Baum said the employees have been given notice that the call center will be closing because of a decline in use as more customers take advantage of the self service options the bank provides.
“The volume of direct calls has decreased over time,” Baum said. “A decision was made to close this location.
Baum said the decision to close the call center was purely operational and had nothing to do with the performance of the center, the $142 million fake account settlement against the bank earlier this year or its remediation.
All employees have been given a 60 day notification, with 15 days where they will continue to report to work and then 45 where they will not.
In addition, Wells Fargo will provide career transition support to those affected by the closure. An official number of jobs losses from the closure will be released tomorrow when Wells Fargo issues the WARN notice.
Wells Fargo still employs more than 500 people in the Greater Lehigh Valley and has around 60 branches between the Lehigh Valley and Berks County.
Baum said those displaced by the closure are encouraged to apply for other jobs within the company.
