Walmart plans $83M upgrade to select Pa. stores

The company is adding services, such as grocery pick up, which will have its own space, allowing for speedier pickup of grocery items ordered online.

Automated pick-up towers are also being installed in some stores where customers can choose to pick up items they ordered online from Walmart.

In some stores, automated floor scrubbers are being deployed to help keep retails area clean. Some are also getting automated delivery-truck unloaders.

Nicole Everett, regional market manager for Walmart, said many of the upgrades will speed up service for customers and free up employees for customer-service functions.

Not all of the stores will receive all of the upgrades. Walmart did not release a breakdown on what was going where.

She noted that some stores in Pennsylvania already have some of these services and technologies.

Walmart also will be remodeling 15 stores.

Pennsylvania Walmart stores on the list for the 2019 upgrades are:

· 2600 Plank Road Commons, Altoona

· 567 Route 100 N., Bechtelsville

· 50 Foster Brook Blvd., Bradford

· 100 Supercenter Drive, Clearfield

· 300 Walmart Drive, Ebensburg

· 1825 Downs Drive, Erie

· 1800 Tilden Ridge, Hamburg

· 495 Eisenhower Drive, Hanover

· 5741 Buffalo Road, Harborcreek

· 1675 S. Christopher Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia

· 9745 Roosevelt Blvd., Suite A, Philadelphia

The Walmart in Muhlenberg Township, Berks County, for example, was the first in the state to have a self-service tower installed. It debuted in August 2017 shortly after that store was remodeled.

The $83 million invested in Pennsylvania stores is part of a national store-improvement initiative. The company did not disclose the overall amount the company would be investing.

It did report it will invest $96 million in stores in New Jersey.
