Using a professional life coach to discover your ‘best self’

Stuck in a rut? Don’t know what should happen next? Feel as though something is missing?

Stuck in a rut? Don’t know what should happen next? Feel as though something is missing?

Those are the many questions that executives and other employees ask themselves when they feel as though they are at a standstill.

Getting a life coach can help.

Life coaches are professionals who help clients in making important decisions and improving their lives. Some decisions include changing careers, repairing relationships or simply choosing to grow up.

“A life/wellness coach is an expert at helping people discover their ‘best selves,’ to use their strengths to stay well and/or to recover from illness, all with an emphasis on wellness,” said Robert Chupella, a certified wellness coach and licensed psychologist in Bethlehem.

A growing profession, life coaching is not a replacement for therapy. Life coaches, however, have a goal of helping clients to create their own solutions, as well as guide them in making their own decisions.

“Unlike therapy, life coaching works with someone where they are right now, in this moment, and guides their focus to where they want to be,” said Tonya Sheridan, a certified life coach who has clients in Pennsylvania.

When it comes to picking a life coach, “the best way is to go to their website and read about the life coach,” Sheridan said. “Also, read their blog and sign up for their newsletter if they have one. This will give you a good idea if what the life coach says resonates with you or not.”

Health-related issues such as stress, smoking and lack of exercise can become key components to becoming bogged down at work.

“Coaching can help to identify and address behavioral obstacles to help individuals to lead healthier and happier lives,” Chupella said. “It can be a great investment in one’s self.”
