The sixth largest county in the state was just to the west, and Souderton-based Univest Bank saw an opportunity.

On Aug. 22, the bank opened its first branch in Lancaster County in West Lampeter Township, several miles south of the city of Lancaster.

Univest’s first foray into the county with a population of 530,000 likely won’t be its last. The bank is eyeing branches in three other Lancaster County municipalities: New Holland, Intercourse and Georgetown.

Meanwhile, 140-year-old Univest also is expanding its geographic footprint elsewhere.

The bank is building a branch in Lower Macungie Township at the Hamilton Crossings retail complex in Trexlertown, as well as planning to open one in Center Valley near the Promenade Shops.

Univest also hopes to open branches in Allentown and Bethlehem.

“We have all the products and services of the big banks, but we have local decision-making with a community focus,” said Mike Keim, president of Univest Bank and Trust Co.

With the Lancaster County branch, Univest now has a physical presence in nine counties in southeastern Pennsylvania.

It increased its presence in Chester County through the acquisition of Fox Chase Bank this past summer, and it will rebrand all branches of Valley Green Bank to the Univest name next year, having acquired Philadelphia-based Valley Green last year.

For Keim and associates to consider opening in Lancaster County, they had a couple of questions.
