To be a leader, be yourself Univest boss Schweitzer says

Be yourself. Listen. And we’ll figure it out.

Be yourself. Listen. And we’ll figure it out.

That’s the advice from Souderton-based Univest Corp. president and CEO Jeffrey Schweitzer, whose company this week marks its 140th anniversary.

“You need to be able to listen. My belief is this is not a dictatorship,” Schweitzer told Lehigh Valley Business, in an exclusive interview, about being an effective leader. “… Be genuine, or else people will see right through it.”

As the man in charge of Univest since 2014, Schweitzer heads a growing company that will have 850 employees once it completes its acquisition of Hatboro-based Fox Chase Bank. Univest will have $4 billion in assets and more than $3 billion in assets managed by its wealth management division.

It’s a big responsibility, yet the Tunkhannock native said he does not get stressed.

“My view is, we’ll figure it out,” said the University of Notre Dame alumnus, who joined Univest in 2007 after a lengthy career with Ernst & Young. “… I think we are going to make the right decisions long-term.”

Schweitzer, 43, lives with his wife, Meghan, and four children in Skippack and enjoys making time for family and giving back to the community.

He also enjoys how banking touches many facets and stages of people’s lives, and from all walks of life – whether it’s a couple buying their first home or an entrepreneur seeking a loan to start a business.

“We can really make a difference in people’s lives,” Schweitzer said. He also talked about industry challenges, interacting with customers and Univest expansion plans, among other topics.
