When it comes time to hand the over the reins of a family owned business, it pays to have a plan.

When it comes time to hand the over the reins of a family owned business, it pays to have a plan.

Fortunately, for a local property management firm, the timing appears perfect for one executive to begin the process of preparing the company for a long-term future.

“The only way you can have succession planning is you have to plan for it,” said David Weinstein, president of Sunburst Property Management in Allentown.

Weinstein’s daughter, Melissa, joined the company six months ago and serves as a property manager. She is looking to tackle more responsibilities, with the ultimate goal of leading the company when her father retires.

Sunburst began in 1980 and offers property management, maintenance and leasing services for commercial and residential properties in the Lehigh Valley, with most clients within an hour’s drive of the Allentown office. The company has 17 employees; about 10 have been with the company for at least 15 years, Weinstein said.

Employee longevity and a targeted, local focus on the small to mid-size commercial and residential rental market have contributed to Sunburst’s success.

Before starting at Sunburst, Melissa Weinstein worked for recruiting firms in Philadelphia and received a master’s degree in sports management from Springfield College in Massachusetts.

She is looking to build on Sunburst’s success.

“I always admired what my dad had done,” she said. “It was a good time to click and move forward. I saw my dad had always been successful. I wanted to create something myself and work in conjunction with him.”

One challenge every family business faces is the blurring of lines between business and family matters, but for David Weinstein, it has never been a problem.
