Workers for Lendlease, a project management and construction company based in New York City, started construction on an expansion for St. Luke’s University Health Network’s Anderson Campus in Bethlehem Township.
An increase in patients led to the need to expand its facilities, according to Sam Kennedy, spokesperson for St. Luke’s.
Officials from both St. Luke’s and Lendlease declined to provide further details.
Published reports reveal the township gave final approval to the development plans in September 2017 for the $100 million project planned to open in 2020.
The four-story 175,000-square-foot hospital will include a maternity ward that can provide service for the delivery of up to 2,600 infants per year and two floors of obstetrics and an emergency room on the first floor. The new hospital will include a basement and allow for future expansion.
Planning Commission minutes from July 2017 reveal the new hospital tower on St. Luke’s Boulevard would be about the same size as the existing tower.
The new hospital is going up next to the existing hospital, itself part of a medical office building and cancer center on the campus.
Lendlease also provided planning and pre-design consulting services for the campus master planning and initial phase of the hospital expansion, according to published reports.
The Anderson Campus opened in 2011 and since that time, doubled the size of its emergency room and built a specialty pavilion.
