Serfass Construction Company of Allentown continues construction on Moravian Academy’s Athletic and Wellness Center, a $10 million athletic facility in Bethlehem Township near Route 22. The building should open in late fall and would be used by both middle and upper school students, said school officials.

The 40,000-square-foot building on the Merle-Smith (upper school) campus will include locker rooms, space for health classes, classrooms for driver education programs, expanded fitness/weight training space, wood court and rubber court, according to Moravian Academy.

Serfass started the project at the beginning of November and should finish this fall.

“We just started setting steel, and we’ll start enclosing the building,” said Kevin Serfass, vice president of Serfass Construction.

In addition to construction, the company also did site work for the project, including stormwater management, building foundations and paving.

The building is designed for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, with the goal of achieving the Silver designation from the U.S. Green Building Council. The project would include recycled building materials and energy efficient fixtures.

Moravian officials said the “Honoring Our Heritage, Building Our Future Campaign” has a goal of $15 million to support the construction of the center, enhance an endowment for faculty salaries and increase the endowment for financial aid.

So far, 132 families in the Moravian Academy community raised more than $5.7 million to support the campaign.
