Just 100 years ago this month, women were first given the right to vote in the United States. This means that many of our great-grandmothers were born into a world where they could not expect to grow up and cast a vote for president.
Just 50 years ago, the only options most women saw for themselves outside of being a mother and wife were teacher, nurse or secretary. While these are noble careers, the countless career options women have available today were not even considered a possibility by many of our mothers and grandmothers.
Thankfully, women have made immeasurable strides over the past 100 years, achieving positions our great grandmothers could not even dream of.
Yet despite our gains, women remain in the minority in both the boardroom and in the legislature. If the achievements of our past are any indication, that too will change for the better.
Since you are reading this column, you are likely aware that the Women in Leadership newsletter shines a light on women in our area who are actively being the change they wish to see in the business world.
I’m excited to let you know that I will be coordinating the newsletter for the Lehigh Valley Business community.
From CEO’s to entrepreneurs to physicians to farmers, we will spotlight Lehigh Valley women who are showing up, standing up, and moving up. All the while changing our world so that our daughters AND sons can be proud to live here.
As a long-time Lehigh Valley journalist, I myself am proud to be a part of such important journalism. Coordinating the Women in Leadership newsletter each month for our readers is both an honor and what feels like a calling.
Some of you may recognize my name from my decade as the editor of the Elucidator magazine, or my many freelance reporting roles at multiple Valley news outlets.
I look forward to calling on these years of experience as I steer the newsletter each month, while learning all I can as we all move forward in this digital age.
And you, our reader, your input is more important than ever. We want to hear from you. Your ideas and feedback will help make the Women in Leadership newsletter something we can all be pleased to read and share.
I invite you to share possible newsletter candidates for future editions with me.
Please enjoy this month’s edition. The wisdom, resilience and success of the women featured inside can inspire us all.
I can’t wait to see what women will achieve in the future.
Here’s to the next 100 years.
