Prog-rock icon brings tour to Allentown

Since its inception in 1968 in London, progressive rock icon King Crimson has made waves in the music industry, best known for its instrumentation and complex song structure encompassing genres of jazz, classical and experimental music.

Following the release of its critically acclaimed debut album “In the Court of the Crimson King,” the band’s success took flight after performing as the support act for The Rolling Stones at Hyde Park, London, in 1969. British rock artist Pete Townshend of The Who labeled Crimson’s debut album as “an uncanny masterpiece,” and since its release, the band has undergone nine lineup changes spanning five decades.

Touring on and off the last few years, King Crimson is embarking on its “Radical Action” tour and will be making a stop at Miller Symphony Hall in Allentown on Saturday, Nov. 11.

The eight-piece lineup includes founder Robert Fripp on guitar, Tony Levin on bass, singer/guitarist Jakko Jakszyk, Mel Collins on flute and saxophones and drummers and multi-instrumentalists Gavin Harrison, Pat Mastelotto, Jeremy Stacey and Bill Rieflin.

Following its breakthrough debut album, the band released several more, underwent hiatuses and had a continually changing lineup of musicians. Fripp is the only consistent member of the group, which has had 21 different members throughout the years.

While its debut album is to this day still the band’s most well-known and successful release, King Crimson produced 13 albums that vary in style and still retain a devout fan base. The current iteration of the band has been touring since 2014, selling out venues and arenas worldwide.

Tickets for the Allentown performance, which is produced by BRE Presents, go on sale Thursday, July 20, at 10 a.m. via Ticketmaster and the Miller Symphony Hall box office.
