Pottsville manufacturing plant to close

The site manufactures nylon films used in food packaging, book covers and other applications, and employs 85 people. Those positions would be eliminated.

Debra Lewis, director of communications for the firm, said employees are being encouraged to apply for positions in AdvanSix facilities in Philadelphia and Virginia. The company will also be offering outplacement services.

The company has formed an alliance with the Oben Group, a flexible-packaging manufacturer based in Lima, Peru, which AdvanSix said has a new state-of the art manufacturing facility.

According to Oben Group’s website, a new nylon manufacturing facility began operations in Peru earlier this year.

AdvanSix declined to comment on where the work is going.

“This capital-efficient and highly synergistic combination best positions us for success in the nylon films industry,” said Erin Kane, president and CEO of AdvanSix, while announcing the company’s first quarter results. “We are thankful for the hard work and dedication of the Pottsville team and are committed to ensuring a seamless transition for our employees and nylon films customers.”

The closure is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2019.

Kane reported AdvanSix had net income of $20.2 million for the first quarter of 2019, an increase of $8.6 million versus the same quarter last year.
