NEW VENTURES: S. Whitehall Wawa part of larger growth for chain

CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Employees, community members, South Whitehall Township police and even the Wawa mascot came out for the Aug. 4 grand opening of Wawa’s newest location, in South Whitehall Township.

South Whitehall Township now has its own Wawa. The store opened its newest location at 408 Cedar Crest Blvd. at the intersection of Cedar Crest and Hamilton boulevards, just down the road from Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom.

The 5,600-square-foot store will have about 40 employees and offer fresh-to-order food, coffee, specialty beverages, bakery and grocery items. Tim Bowers will manage the store.

“Throughout 2017, as we open and remodel a record number of stores, we look forward to … showcasing our latest store design and expanded offerings and creating more meaningful connections at our stores and through our Wawa app,” said Brian Schaller, senior vice president of real estate and fuel operations for Wawa Inc.

As is traditional at Wawa grand openings, the company held a hoagie-building contest between members of local law enforcement (South Whitehall police) and made a $1,000 donation to charity selected by the participants.

It is the 27th Wawa that the chain of convenience store and gas stations, based in Wawa, Delaware County, has opened this year. Nor is it the last for the company that is in an aggressive growth pattern.

Wawa said it has plans to open more than 50 stores and remodel 75 existing stores throughout its operating area in the mid-Atlantic and Florida markets.

Wawa has more than 750 convenience retail stores, with more than 500 of them offering gasoline. Its stores are in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Florida.

Pottsville mall adds two tenants

Fairlane Village Mall in Pottsville has added two new tenants: Benigna’s Creek Vineyard & Winery’s wine store and T-Mobile are now open at the 405,000-square-foot Pottsville retail property.

“Benigna’s Creek Vineyard & Winery is well known within this marketplace and has a loyal clientele,” Levin Management Corp. leasing representative Barry Borsky said. “… The store is a great complement to the in-place tenant mix at the property.”

Benigna’s 800-square-foot retail shop, which relocated from Frackville, sells more than 20 varieties of wine.

Wireless voice and data communications services provider T-Mobile is operating in a 1,065-square-foot space.

Early learning center gets larger, independent facility

Red Door Early Learning Center has a grand opening planned for Aug. 14 to reveal its new home in Center Valley.

The event will be hosted by the Southern Lehigh Chamber of Commerce.

“The new location gives us so many more advantages,” said director of education Kristen Buckno. “Not only do we get a better, more convenient location that allows us to expand our enrollment to meet the growing demand, but the building allowed us to design the space for our programs rather than trying to fit our programs into the existing space.”

Red Door had been at Lower Saucon United Church of Christ in Hellertown since its inception in 1964. Its move to an independent location at the larger Center Valley location was aimed to improve access for additional children and families in a building designed for early childhood education.

The new facility is at 4777 Saucon Creek Road in Center Valley. For more information, visit
