The Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau reported another strong year for the region’s tourism industry, which attracted 25.6 million visitors to the region in fiscal year 2015-16. The organization reported $9.15 million in revenue for the year, which grew from the year prior.
During its annual report luncheon Thursday at Stroudsmoor Country Inn, PMVB highlighted its accomplishments and actions over the past year, while also acknowledging regional individuals and partners who contribute to the success of Pocono Mountains tourism.
“Our numbers are continuing to grow,” said Carl Wilgus, president and CEO of PMVB.
“We will continue to strive for greatness moving forward because we know how important the tourism industry is to the well-being of our four counties,” he said, speaking of Carbon, Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties.
The 2015-16 report showed an uptick in visits to the PMVB website with a significant increase in mobile visitors. The bureau grew its marketing efforts by increasing broadcast television, out-of-home advertising and digital advertising in the Philadelphia and New York regions. It also hosted 16 adventure sport races during the year with more than 40,000 registered participants.
“This year had its ups and down,” Wilgus said. “As a region, we saw one of the warmest winters and one of the coolest springs on record. … But, despite the challenging winter and spring, we have had a very successful year.”
The luncheon recognized tourism partners for their efforts and dedication in supporting the PMVB and Pocono Mountains tourism in general. Those recognized included Weather Metrics, Mid-Atlantic Events Magazine and the National Parks Conservation Association, all of whom helped promote the sustainability of the Pocono Mountains as a tourism destination.
The event ended with an award given to the seventh recipient of the Gail V. Sterrett Marketing Award, given annually in memory of Sterrett, who died in 2009 and was PMVB’s marketing director for 25 years. The award was presented to Sarah O’Fee, director of sales and marketing for the Settlers Hospitality Group of Hawley.
