Mack Defense has begun production on five Mack Granite Heavy Dump Trucks at its Lower Macungie plant.
The five HDTs, as they are called, are part of the vehicle testing phase of a $296 million contract with the U.S. Army for armored and armor-capable heavy dump trucks.
The Army solicited bids for new HDTs in June 2017, seeking vehicles that would offer increased protection levels, higher payload and improved mobility. Mack Defense won the contract in May 2018.
Mack Defense engineers based the vehicles on the civilian version of the Mack Granite, but optimized it to meet the current needs of the U.S. Army,
When complete the five trucks will go through 40 weeks of durability testing at the Army’s Aberdeen Test Center.
The contract calls for Mack Defense to produce armor-capable or armored HDTs with deliveries through May 2025.
Mack Defense is a wholly owned subsidiary of Mack Trucks, which is part of the Volvo Group.
