Lehigh Valley Health Network is opening a new pediatric unit at its Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital Today.
Located on the Cedar Crest campus on the fifth floor of the Jaindl Family Pavilion, the 24,000-square-foot unit has 30 private patient rooms and is more than twice the size of the hospital’s previous pediatric unit.
Aimed at easing the stress of families with a hospitalized child, each room has a sleeper sofa for parents to spend the night and a desk for parents who need to work.
The unit also has a family lounge with a bathroom, shower, and washer and dryer that families can use.
The unit, and ongoing growth planned for the children’s hospital, was funded through a donation by City Center Investment Corp. CEO J.B. Reilly and his wife Kathleen.
City Center Investment Corp. has been behind growth in downtown Allentown with more than $1 billion in redevelopment projects.
The amount of the donation was not disclosed.
Hospital officials said the opening of the unit is part of a plan to bring the services of more than 30 pediatric specialties under one roof at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital.
Construction is also underway on a dedicated lobby for the children’s hospital. It’s expected to open in the spring of 2019.
Expansion of the neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric intensive care unit, and development of surgical, child-life and community health services for children also are planned.
