Lehigh Valley Wine Trail celebrates region’s viticulture

The Lehigh Valley Wine Trail is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Lehigh Valley American Viticultural Area with a new event and restaurant partnership promotion to encourage wine lovers to buy and drink local wine during June.

Lehigh Valley Wine Trail Month will take place during weekends in June and feature two components.

The first of the two is “The Vintner’s Experience,” which features experiences at each of the wine trail’s eight member wineries on weekends which will expose customers to the winemaking process in a fun and educational way.

One $25 ticket gets customers into all eight experiences for the month, or as many of the eight as they wish to attend. Attendees are allowed to attend each winery’s experience only once. Each winery’s experience is offered once each weekend in June so customers have four times during the month to attend.

The second is a month-long partnership with 20 restaurants which will encourage wine lovers to drink local in June. Each partner restaurant will feature local wines on its menu, some will serve special wine cocktails and others will offer discounts on local wine by the glass.

“The goal of the event is to celebrate the 10 year AVA anniversary while continuing to raise awareness for local, Lehigh Valley wine and wineries,” said Tracey Werner, whose company Blabbermouth Communications does marketing for the wine trail.

“Events like this help bring people out to learn, taste and buy the wines our wineries make. … It’s also a celebration of Lehigh Valley viticulture and how much the region has grown for winemaking in that decade,” she said.

Werner said that the event benefits local wineries through overall exposure and awareness, and by generating sales from customers.

“The more residents we can make aware of the high-quality wines being made in their own backyard and the importance of buying local and thereby supporting local farmers, the better to increase sales, both at the wineries and in other outlets like winery-owned wine shop locations, at the PLCB [Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board] and in local grocery stores,” she said.

The Lehigh Valley AVA is a federal designation that recognizes the region for grape growing and winemaking.

In 2008, members of the wine trail worked together to formally apply for the AVA designation from the federal government.

Wineries whose wines are made from grapes grown within the region are permitted to put “Lehigh Valley” on their labels as the source of origin.

Lehigh Valley Wine Trail Month is supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Winery Association.
