From Wall Street to caregiving, inspired by mom

Few people can say they left a career in the bustling stock exchange world in Manhattan for at-home caretaking of seniors and the less-abled.

Few people can say they left a career in the bustling stock exchange world in Manhattan for at-home caretaking of seniors and the less-abled.

But Belinda Gordon lived out what has become an unexpected dream in this very vein, all inspired by her mother, Maureen Nevill, who died just months after establishing Gordon & Gordon Enterprises Inc. – doing business as Homewatch CareGivers of the Lehigh Valley – as a franchise in 2002.

The business is based in the Bethlehem area and also services the Poconos. Colorado-based Homewatch International Inc., the franchisor, opened in 1996 and today employs an estimated 5,500 people.

Paul Gordon, Belinda’s husband, is a co-owner of the franchise. Her son, Joshua Benavides, also is part of the business.

In the near future, Gordon aims to expand the frequency of visits within care management services, she said.

Some of these services include head-to-toe examinations, communicating with primary care doctors and family about a client’s circumstance, tracking appointments and follow-up care needs, documenting and following nutritional directions, management of medications and locating contractors to do repairs or lawn-cutting.

Nevill died at 70, having endured multiple sclerosis after a diagnosis at 35 when her daughter was 5.

In 1980, Gordon took a posting clerk job on Wall Street with a trading firm called Troster, Singer & Co. She worked her way up to manager and vice president at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, which later was bought by Credit Suisse First Boston.

Gordon left her NASDAQ work in 2001, figuring that her job eventually would be eliminated as technology began taking the place of more and more positions.

“My husband kept working, so we’d have income when I worked to start the business,” Gordon said. “In 2006, he quit his job as an options trader and joined the company.”
