Four Pennsylvanians make the top 50 in Forbes’ annual ranking of world celebrities who earned the most money over the past 12 months.
Reading-born Taylor Swift leads all Pennsylvanians at No. 21, followed by NFL quarterback Matt Ryan (Exton) at 29, actor comedian Kevin Hart (Philadelphia) at 39 and singer Pink (Doylestown) at 45.
No. 1 is boxer Floyd Mayweather, followed by, in order, actor George Clooney, reality TV star and cosmetics entrepreneur Kylie Jenner, Judy Sheindlin of “Judge Judy” fame and actor/pro wrestler Dwayne Johnson.
California-born Johnson, also known as The Rock, has Pennsylvania roots, having gone to high school at Freedom in Bethlehem.
Clooney, who hasn’t starred in a hit movie in years, made the bulk of his money through the sale of his production company.
How much do celebs earn in a year? The Forbes list is inconsistent with its figures, as it says top-ranked Mayweather earned $285 million while Jenner (ranked third) earned $900 million. And it says that Swift earned $320 million.
Regardless, it’s doubtful any of these celebs will be looking for handouts anytime soon.
IS THE END NEAR?
A former colleague lost his job this week when the New York Daily News laid off about half of its editorial staff. His talents eventually should land him another job, but that’s no consolation.
Meanwhile, the Daily News, the one-time powerhouse that championed the common man, is down to 40-some people in its newsroom. Charged with covering the nation’s biggest and perhaps most important city.
No one knows what’s going to happen when daily newspapers shrivel and die. But all of us will be much worse off when it occurs.
