Throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley, there are many business coaches and consultants equipped with the resources to help your business succeed.

From financial guidance to team training and leadership coaching, there are many facets in which these coaches and consultants can help.

One company that focuses on coaching health and wellness in the workplace is Wonder Health and Wellness LCC in Breinigsville.

Here to answer this week’s “Behind the List” questions is Mehri Ulas, the company’s owner and healthy lifestyle consultant and educator.

Lehigh Valley Business: How long has Wonder Health and Wellness LLC been operating in the region and what are its primary services?

Mehri Ulas: I am a healthy lifestyle consultant and doctor of medicine with over 20 years of experience in primary patient care, research and clinical laboratory settings.

Two years ago, I launched my company, Wonder Health and Wellness LLC, to specifically address health and wellness issues that most of my patients deal with on a daily basis.

By combining my previous experience as a physician with health coaching techniques, I assist people in finding a wellness plan for themselves that lead to healthier and more productive lives. This way it will boost their confidence, manage stress better, take control of their weight, use motivational triggers and, at the end, build long-lasting behavior change.

LVB: What have been some of the biggest challenges and opportunities that Wonder Health and Wellness LLC has encountered throughout its years in business?

Ulas: Sometimes I hear from my patients a defensive attitude toward heart disease due to their family history: “My grandmother died of a heart attack and my mother has trouble, too. I know my genetics are against me. There is no point in living a healthy lifestyle.”

On the contrary, a recent study looked at 55,000 people and examined both their genetics and their lifestyle to determine which contributed greater to heart disease. The study showed that while having a genetic risk for heart disease can double the chances of getting the disease, a healthy lifestyle can cut your chances in half.

In addition, leading an exceedingly unhealthy lifestyle can cut the benefit of having good genes in half.

LVB: How does Wonder Health and Wellness LLC directly stimulate the local economy? How does it get involved with the local community?

Ulas: As part of Twin Ponds Integrative Health Center, with more than 20 integrative health professionals, we help people heal, relax and rejuvenate.

We organize open houses, library talks and adult classes. One of them is a flexible one-day workshop that helps employees increase their stress awareness and develop skills to help them manage a healthier lifestyle both at work and home.

LVB: What does the future look like for Wonder Health and Wellness LLC? Does it have plans for growth?

Ulas: Our awareness of health has been steadily rising over the years. We tend to initiate changes in our lives to eliminate unhealthy behaviors and avoid preventable health problems and chronic conditions.

About half of all Americans have at least one or more chronic health conditions. More than 80 percent of all health care spending costs go to chronic medical conditions caused by preventable health risk behaviors.

Stress especially is the No. 1 wellness issue today for most organizations; workplace stress is as bad for the heart as smoking or high cholesterol and affects overall productivity, performance and bottom-line results.

We would like to address this epidemic of stress and help people better manage and prevent it.
