Behind the List with Kevin Schmidt of The Neffs National Bank

'With hardships come opportunities'

Operating and managing any financial institution means hard work and dedication. Whether it’s a large conglomerate or a smaller, community-based company, making smart decisions and implementing strong business tactics into daily operations are imperative to the prosperity of not only the business, but also to customers.

Operating and managing any financial institution means hard work and dedication. Whether it’s a large conglomerate or a smaller, community-based company, making smart decisions and implementing strong business tactics into daily operations are imperative to the prosperity of not only the business, but also to customers.

One community-based bank that makes a significant impact in the Lehigh Valley is The Neffs National Bank in North Whitehall Township.

Here to answer this week’s “Behind the List” questions is Kevin Schmidt, president and CEO of The Neffs National Bank.

Lehigh Valley Business: How long has The Neffs National Bank been operating in the Greater Lehigh Valley and what are its primary services?

Kevin Schmidt: The Neffs National Bank was chartered in 1923 and services the Lehigh Valley area. We are a full-service commercial bank and offer a full complement of consumer and commercial loans, deposit products and related services.

LVB: What have been some of the biggest hardships and opportunities that the bank has encountered throughout its years in business?

Schmidt: I would say that some of the biggest hardships faced by the bank involved economic downturns from the “Great Depression” to the “Great Recession.” In addition, the increased regulatory burden has made it difficult and more expensive for community banks and their customers.

With hardships come opportunities. With the recession and the fallout from the large banks and mortgage companies, people distrusted these institutions and were looking for someone they could trust, someone they could talk to. They turned to community banks like ours.

While the regulatory burdens have increased for all banks, community banks have been able to get some relief, which can make it easier on our customers.

LVB: How does The Neffs National Bank directly stimulate the local economy?
