Air Products to build second gas plant for Arkansas steel company

Air Products will own and operate the unit, which will support expansion of a Big River Steel mill in Osceola, Arkansas.

Big River plans to double the capacity of its LEED-certified, scrap recycling and steel production facility in Osceola, which will bring it to annual production of 3.3 million tons.

The new air separation unit, or ASU, will join an existing Air Products ASU at the location and will provide oxygen, nitrogen and argon to both Big River and the merchant market, which is seeing regional growth in several segments including food, metals, construction and stainless-steel industries.

The new Air Products facility will be capable of producing over 250 tons per day of oxygen and additional quantities of liquid products, boosting Air Products’ liquid bulk business.

The new unit is roughly the same size as the existing one, which has been operating since 2016.

The new ASU is scheduled to be up and running by January 2021. Air Products declined to disclose the cost of its construction.
