LVB: Rules and regulations in both pension and health care are continually changing. How does Miers Insurance stay ahead of the curve and keep up with these changes?
Rocky Gencarelli: Our agency personnel are actively involved in industry trade groups through membership or committee positions. This allows us to gain an early look at prospective changes in our industry or allows us to provide insight into changes we would like to see.
LVB: How does it work with local businesses to implement employee benefits programs as regulations continue to evolve?
Gencarelli: The needs of every client are different and some businesses don’t often know how to tackle the challenges or requirements they must comply with. We value every client as a partnership. Our goal is to increase the value proposition of our client’s business by partnering with us. With trust in each other, we can satisfy the unique needs and challenges of each client differently, but similarly in the sense of the deployment of our tools and resources to assist their staff with employee benefits rollouts. This may include technology platforms, human resources policies, benchmarking, funding mechanisms and much more.
LVB: How does Miers Insurance directly stimulate the local economy? How does it get involved with the local community?
Gencarelli: Our agency is 127 years old and has resided in Allentown for all 127 years. Our employees have lived, worked and played here in the Lehigh Valley for all of this time. We consider the Lehigh Valley our home and Allentown our headquarters.
Our agency encourages active volunteerism. We financially support many local charities and are hands-on in a variety of nonprofit projects. As an insurance agency we touch many local businesses and find great joy in connecting our own clients with each other to help find synergies for their organizations.
LVB: What is your guiding philosophy as a business leader?
Gencarelli: Be honest, trust in each other, embrace change, commit to continuous improvement, take ownership in all we do and deliver amazing service. These are our core values and deliver a set of guiding principles we can focus on each and every day.
LVB: If you could change one thing about your industry, what would it be?
Gencarelli: Finding an equitable balance in health insurance that fixes what didn’t work in the past (pre-Affordable Care Act) and doesn’t require us to undo the entire system and start over (i.e. Medicare for All). This would require true compromise in politics, which is something I would also wish for.
