5 QUESTIONS WITH … Dr. Sandeep Singh, Division Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs, Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Network, Allentown

How is Good Shepherd adapting to advances in technology?

How is Good Shepherd adapting to advances in technology?

One thing that sets Good Shepherd apart is our use of technology to maximize patient outcomes and return as much function as possible. Conventional therapy is effective, but integrating technology throughout our continuum of care allows us to take patients further in their rehabilitative journey.

Therapeutic technologies, such as the Ekso bionic exoskeleton, enable patients who were unable to walk or having difficulty walking to achieve progress that was impossible just a few years ago. The ZeroG gait trainer provides dynamic weight support that helps patients increase their cardiovascular activity, improve their bone health and gets them upright so they can see the environment they are engaging in.

These technologies and others support the idea of neuroplasticity – that with enough repetition, the body can relearn what it has lost the ability to do.

Besides technology, what other changes has Good Shepherd implemented in the last year?

Good Shepherd has implemented several programs in the past year based on the belief that our patients have the potential to recover.

For instance, our rehabilitation oncology program provides comprehensive therapy to help cancer patients mitigate the effects of their illness and treatment. We have introduced a robust concussion program so that patients can get multiple therapies, including vision, cognitive and speech, in one place.

Our urodynamic service is designed to diagnose and treat those with bowel and bladder problems secondary to neurologic disease or injury. We have also developed a program that focuses on spasticity – a neurologic movement disorder characterized by muscle tightness that can limit function.

What new health care trends do you see in the rehabilitative care industry in the next three to five years?

Health care is shifting to a value-based model, where physicians are increasingly accountable for reducing costs and achieving better outcomes for patients.
