1 In general, how do businesses in the region fare in terms of offering effective wellness programs for their employees?

The businesses in our region are mainly small to mid-sized, and those committed to providing wellness to their employees have successful wellness programs.

This involves investments in the time, resources and culture to keep healthy employees well and support those who need help to improve or maintain their health. This investment can be more difficult for a small to mid-sized business, but there is still opportunity to make an impact.

Businesses should be cautious of getting caught up in return-on-investment data or promises that cannot be generalized to their company. Employers will know their programs are effective if employees want to participate and are engaged in their health care decisions.

Our most successful clients have involved employees from all areas of the company to plan their initiatives, have strong leadership support and seek the advice of health promotion professionals to guide planning and measure results.

2 Name one or two initiatives that a business “must do” in terms of wellness, and why.

Two “must-do” initiatives are conducting a needs assessment of your business and creating a short- and long-term strategic wellness plan, which includes measurements of success.

A needs assessment involves leadership and listening. Businesses with a strong leadership vision and visible support for the company wellness programs, and culture, will outlast those chasing the latest industry fads.

Employees engage more when leadership is engaged. Ask and listen to what employees want – and do not want – in order to help support them in becoming their best selves, whether through achieving better health, improving wellbeing or having a better quality of life for their families.
