Reading Eagle, WEEU's parent company has filed for bankruptcy

The Reading Eagle Co. which publishes a daily newspaper, The Reading Eagle, and runs radio station WEEU 830 AM, has announced that is seeking bankruptcy protection.

The 150-year-old, family-owned company said it will continue to operate, publish and broadcast under bankruptcy rules while it attempts to find a buyer for its operations.

The Reading-based company said in a press release that it had retained a media broker, Dirks, Van Essen, Murray & April of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and has met with several potential buyers over the past few months.

It said it is hopeful that it will attract a buyer.

The company also operates the weekly newspaper, South Schuylkill News; Pretzel City Productions, an entertainment and event division; and REP, its commercial printing subsidiary.
