Wegman Companies Inc. based in Rochester, New York, plans to build a memory care and senior living community on nearly nine acres in Hanover Township, Northampton County.

Wegman Companies is collaborating with Columbia Pacific Senior Housing, a Seattle-based investment firm, to build the facility at 4700-4720 Bath Pike (Route 512) in Hanover Township.

The township has until May 1 to review plans for the project, called Hanover Township Senior Living, said Yvonne Kutz, zoning officer for the township. The project received planning commission approval and conditional approval from the township in January but a few items remain to be addressed, she said.

The plan calls for one two-story building that would include a memory care and senior living facility with 140 beds and 105,000 square feet, Kutz said.

Wegman Companies has developed and built assisted living and memory care communities in Erie and Collegeville as well as in Maine and Connecticut. The company is not related to Wegmans Food Markets.

The Kunsman family, which owns the land, sold the property to Columbia Wegman Hanover LLC for $2.2 million, according to a news release.

Earl Kunsman said there are three vacant residential buildings on the site. One is a two-unit apartment that had once been a barn and the others are single-family homes.

Kunsman said he decided to sell the property because it was too much to maintain.

Matt Macdonald, vice president of Markward Group of Upper Macungie Township, said he represented the seller in the transaction.
