Kathleen Harring, Ph.D., earned her B.A. in psychology from Franklin and Marshall College and received her M.A. and Ph.D. in social psychology with a minor in quantitative psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She joined the Muhlenberg faculty in 1984 and was promoted to Professor of Psychology in 1999. Dr. Harring received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and the Paul C. Empie Memorial Award for Teaching and Service and chaired the psychology department from 1993-2006.
A founding member of the College's Faculty Center for Teaching, Dr. Harring directed the Center from 1995-2007. She served as Associate Dean of Institutional Assessment from 2006-2013 and Dean of Institutional Assessment and Academic Planning from 2013-2016. In these roles, Dr. Harring was responsible for leading accreditation activities and overseeing student learning and institutional assessment. In 2012, she was selected as an American Council on Education Fellow and spent her fellowship year at Bucknell University focusing on institutional advancement and strategic planning.
Dr. Harring frequently speaks at national and international higher education conferences on innovative pedagogies, general education reform, and faculty leadership development. Her scholarship, which involves undergraduate researchers, examines the role that music plays in social bonding. She regularly serves as a member of accreditation visiting teams.
As Provost, Dr. Harring oversees curriculum and instruction, and manages all fiscal and personnel aspects of the academic program which includes 19 academic departments, the Martin Art Gallery, the Center for Ethics, the Muhlenberg Polling Institute, the Institute for Jewish and Christian Understanding, and the Wescoe School of Continuing Education. She supervises the Provost Senior Staff including the Dean of Academic Life, Dean of Global Education, Dean of the Wescoe School, Associate Dean of Digital Learning, Associate Dean for Diversity Initiatives, Director of Trexler Library, and the Registrar.
