Snow season may be nearing end, but plow drivers still needed

Commuters may be hoping that Wednesday’s storm was the season’s last, but the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation isn’t taking any chances. It’s still hiring seasonal plow truck drivers.

It may seem strange seeing advertisements seeking plow truck drivers this late into the winter season, but PennDOT said it is, indeed, still looking for seasonal drivers.

Sean Brown, spokesman for PennDOT District Five, which covers the Greater Lehigh Valley, said the need for drivers is being felt across the state, and locally as well.

Brown said that while it’s not uncommon for PennDOT to continue to seek seasonal plow truck drivers right through the end of the season, low unemployment and a current high demand for people with commercial driver’s licenses is making finding seasonal drivers difficult.

It hasn’t been a particularly snowy winter in the region, but numerous smaller snow storms have kept up the demand for drivers.

Brown said that while more drivers are needed, PennDOT has had adequate coverage for the roadways it services.

“We run 12 hour shifts and we still have the ability to pull teams from other areas with less snow if we need to,” he said.

Ads for seasonal drivers have been placed on billboards, industry message boards and the state’s website and Brown said those ads will likely remain up until the end of winter.

He noted that often drivers that get hired to seasonal plowing jobs are hired to full-time jobs at PennDOT at the end of the season if there are openings.
