UGI Energy Services buys Jersey firm's retail natural gas business

By ,

UGI Energy Services LLC said it acquired the retail natural gas business of South Jersey Energy Co., including Open Flow Energy.

The deal closed Nov. 30, said Pam Witmer, vice president of government affairs for UGI Energy Services, a subsidiary of UGI Corp., which is based in Spring Township, Berks County.

The purchase includes all of South Jersey Energy Co.’s 2,500 commercial and industrial customer contracts, which includes supply service to about 6,000 locations, she said. Open Flow Energy is a segment of South Jersey Energy Co.’s business, she added.

Witmer did not disclose the sale price.

UGI also took on some of South Jersey Energy Co.’s sales executives, she said.

It is not known whether the acquisition prompted any layoffs for the New Jersey firm.

South Jersey Energy Co. did not return a phone call requesting comment.

“UGI Energy Services has been looking for opportunities to expand our retail footprint in the areas where we are growing, especially where we have strong operations already,” Witmer said. “We are looking to fill in segments of those areas.”

As part of the acquisition, South Jersey Energy Co. will keep its name.

“As least for the foreseeable future, they will continue to operate under their existing name,” she said.

She said the acquisition would be a seamless transition for South Jersey Energy’s customers.
