C.F. Martin & Co.'s North Street Complex in Nazareth has just been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The North Street Complex includes the former Martin Guitar manufacturing buildings, powerhouse, and Martin homestead. It currently houses the Guitar Maker’s Connection where Martin sells guitar parts and kits.

According to the company, founder C.F. Martin immigrated from Germany, and had a brief stint as a guitar maker in New York City.

He then moved to Pennsylvania and purchased land where he would construct the Martin Guitar buildings from local Moravians in 1857.

From 1857 through 1964 the property was used as the guitar manufacturing facility, until the company’s growth led it to move those operations to 510 Sycamore St. in Upper Nazareth, where it continues to operate today.

"I am very proud that my family's original factory in Nazareth has been selected for National Historic Landmark status," said Chris Martin, chairman and CEO in a release. "For well over 100 years, this facility produced many of the guitars, ukuleles, and mandolins used by professionals and amateur musicians across the U.S. and around the world. The music made on Martin instruments was and is a very significant part of musical culture for generations."

While receiving the designation is an honor in itself, there is also a financial benefit.

The designation allows for a 20 percent income tax credit for the rehabilitation of any historic, income-producing buildings.
