The NEPA Alliance is celebrating one of its success stories with a ceremonial check presentation to Stoker’s Brewing Co. LLC of Tamaqua to recognize how the $50,000 low-interest business loan it provided the brewer helped it to get started.

Stoker’s Brewing Co. has been up and running on Mauch Chunk Street in Tamaqua since August, and brewer, owner Doug Drost, said the funds he received from the NEPA Alliance and Mauch Chunk Trust Co. helped him complete the $140,000 project.

Drost said he had already purchased the building for $40,000.

“It was pretty much an empty shell,” Drost said. The loans -- $50,000 from NEPA and $40,000 from Mauch Chunk helped him to renovate the building and buy brewing equipment to create his brews and tables and chairs for a tasting room.

The NEPA called Stroker’s a welcome addition to Tamaqua, which was didn’t have anything like it prior to Drost developing the microbrewery.

“The company fills a niche in the Schuylkill County beer market by producing their own beer on-site in small batches,” it said in a release.

And Drost said he’s happy to be filling that niche. He said he’s excited to be part of burst of redevelopment in the area known as Five Points.

He noted the building he located in had been vacant for about 10 years and several other small businesses have opened up in the area lately.

He said he’s also happy to be part of the synergy of growing those other businesses. His brewery, which has 12 beers on tap in different styles, doesn’t serve food, so local restaurants deliver food to his customers, boosting their businesses as well.

He also plans to have food truck events to give people even more reason to come to Stroker’s and to Tamaqua.

“The response has been fantastic. People have been telling me they wanted something like this, and I’m getting repeat customers bringing in other new customers,” Drost said.

The check presentation will be held at Stroker’s at 36 Mauch Chunk St., Tamaqua at 10 a.m. on Nov. 30.
