Strong skills in both creativity and construction come into play during a local event aimed at fighting hunger one can at a time.

CANstruction Greater Lehigh Valley is scheduled to host its fourth annual event on Oct. 12 at Lehigh Valley Mall in Whitehall Township to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley.

Each year, teams of architects, engineers, contractors and manufacturers join forces to create structures out of canned food. The result is both an artistic display and a food drive to help raise awareness about hunger in the region.

The displays are up from Oct. 12 to Oct. 26, with all cans used for their creations donated to the food bank. It’s always cool to see the results of these creations as they come to life, occupying a prominent space in the mall.

Judges will give out six awards this year, including Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Best Meal and Best Original Design. On Oct. 15 at 8 a.m., the judges will judge the displays on their first impression, attention to detail, inclusion of healthy ingredients, and design and structural integrity.

The competition started when members of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chapter of CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) and the AIA (American Institute of Architects) created a local chapter of CANstruction, which is an international organization more than a decade old.

Last year, the organization gathered 36,000 cans of food for Second Harvest, which equaled 45,861 pounds of food.
