Over the past few years, builders have constructed a bunch of gyms across the Greater Lehigh Valley, running the gamut from big chain locations to independently owned smaller sites.
The interest people have in getting or continuing to stay in shape has helped fuel the billion-dollar fitness industry and the need for physical spaces where people can break a sweat, slim down, bulk up or some combination of the three.
That’s a good thing, because in a crowded marketplace, people will have more options and fewer excuses.
I’m someone that actually enjoys training and am hard-pressed to find an exercise I don’t like, so I consider the gyms popping up everywhere a positive thing.
These days, gyms offer just about everything. One recent example is the new Valley Wellness Center in Hanover Township, Northampton County.
It’s an expansive center with an uncommon design. One step inside helps you see how far fitness centers have evolved. One of the highlights is a 35-foot climbing wall similar to what one would find in an indoor rock-climbing gym.
And while Valley Wellness offers traditional cardio and strength-training equipment, there’s also a wide range of features that one normally wouldn’t find, including a golf lab, outdoor pool and full-service salon and spa.
It’s one example of how developers are responding to the changing trends in fitness, offering people a variety of options under one roof, focusing not just on the body, but the mind as well. It will be interesting to see what further steps the industry and developers will take.
