ArtsQuest will be making a presentation to the Historic Conservation Commission on Monday about plans for the redevelopment of its Banana Factory site in south Bethlehem.

Mark Demko, spokesman for the arts organization, said the project is still in its early planning stages, but the goal is to transform the space, now used mostly for visual arts classes, into a community cultural center.

The Morning Call of Allentown reported that the existing Banana Factory building, which was created in 1998 out of a former fruit warehouse, could be demolished as part of the project.

Demko did not confirm that, but said the presentation Monday is the first step in developing the arts center and its programing into the as-of-yet unnamed cultural center.

He said the plan involves building a new cultural center that incorporates elements of the existing Banana Factory.

“Our ultimate goal after completing this process will be taking the arts center and programming concepts and ideas to the community at large, holding focus groups and other meetings with key partners to ensure we are meeting the needs of our community when it comes to arts and arts education programming,” he said.

No renderings have been created of the proposal as of yet, but Demko said some illustrations will be available for Monday’s presentation.
