Google’s human-sounding AI could allay routine tasks

By ,

We’ve made leaps and bounds in technology the past 15 years.

Tech experts, engineers and entrepreneurs have introduced technology that allows us to accomplish what was once thought to be impossible and unreachable. We have self-driving cars, digital personal assistants, smartphones and the continuously developed artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence transcends most technological advancements in modern day society. Our advanced intelligence is becoming more human-like, regarding speech pattern, language, the tone of voice and rationale.

Specifically, Google Duplex is leading the charge in AI development. It’s AI on a deeper level.

In early developments, AI once was configured to handle straightforward tasks and respond in a manner that was unmistakably computer-based.

Statistics confirm people view their digital personal assistant as a “friend” or something that is human-like. That being said, companies seek to make strides in a version of AI that resonates with human beings at the core and how we communicate.

Google Duplex is intricate and has many pros and cons to the center of its development. It can have benefits to many businesses regarding customer service engagements. It’s also a massive leap in technology, one that people may not be prepared for in 2018.

<WHAT IS GOOGLE DUPLEX?

Stripped down, Google Duplex is a form of AI that strives to create more human-sounding interactions between computers and people. As a society, we have already encountered styles of this artificial intelligence, such as automated messages when contacting a business. We also have familiarity with digital personal assistants, which guide us and promptly retrieve information. Although we’ve dipped our toes into this realm of technology, we haven’t dived into its full capabilities, but we’re on our way to learning more.

While AI has come a long way, it still has shortcomings, which Google Duplex is trying to improve. A typical example is when the digital personal assistant doesn’t recognize what you said or when an automated system at a business is unable to translate what you meant when following its instructions.

Google Duplex artificial intelligence intends to have the technology work around the human, not the other way around. It strives to interpret and make the most sense of the information given to the artificial intelligence.

Google Duplex solves these problems by allowing the computer to have a natural conversation with a human. The person can speak as he or she usually would to another person. Google Duplex uses a natural tone and “um” and other pauses just like a human would during a conversation. During a conversation, the computer can handle interruptions and elaborate more on details.

<WHAT CAN IT DO FOR YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS?

Google Duplex is capable of many things, but the main thing is handling your planning tasks – which saves time so you can tackle more pressing matters. For example, it can call restaurants and make a reservation, and it can call places to make appointments for you within the standards you set for a date and time.

Once the appointment or reservation is made, Google Duplex will notify you to confirm. The business on the other end most likely will not realize the incoming call is from a form of artificial intelligence.

Google Duplex also is potentially beneficial to businesses regarding customer service inquiries. Businesses who routinely schedule clients and customers – such as doctors, lawyers and salons – could use this form of AI to handle incoming calls. Companies of all sizes can benefit from implementing this type of AI to take care of their booking and call log.

By eliminating the need for automated step-by-step processes on phone calls to businesses, Google Duplex can lessen the time needed on the phone and assist the person on the other end of the call to get the answer or service desired. Both parties profit by saving time and money.

<POTENTIAL DOUBTS WITH GOOGLE DUPLEX

While Google Duplex comes with many attributes that would enhance the user experience and make things easier for people to manage tasks, it also has potential problems.

Breach of privacy is a significant concern of users. Is there a possibility that information can be leaked and misused? Is it secure to have a computer call a company in your name?

Many questions similar to these arise regarding Google Duplex’s initiatives. AI is rapidly evolving, and some people are concerned with what that may mean for the future. Google addresses some of these concerns by stating that at the start of a call, the person is notified that the call is being recorded.

In the coming weeks, Google Duplex will be available at test salons and test markets, and users can use Google Assistant on their phone in Google Home.

With some people entirely on board and some on the fence because of security concerns, the next few months could tell the kind of influence Google Duplex will have on users and businesses.
