Recent graduates and employees interested in a career change can enroll in a free program that teaches them the basics of manufacturing.

Manufacturers Resource Center is starting courses on The Fundamentals of Manufacturing, a pilot program at Lehigh Carbon Community College, said Jack Pfunder, president and CEO of MRC. Participants will take the courses at LCCC in Schnecksville or in MRC’s mobile training lab in Hanover Township, Lehigh County.

The initiative aims to get a new group of people interested in joining companies in entry-level positions to grow, Pfunder said.

“It’s trying to solve that problem of educating workers,” he said.

According to MRC, the Lehigh Valley has 900 manufacturers, and 71 percent anticipate adding employees.

The program will include online, classroom and skill-building activities aligned with the needs of local companies, including plant tours and meetings with hiring managers and topics that explore conflict resolution, blueprint reading and safety regulations, among others.

MRC, LCCC and Lehigh Valley Workforce Investment Board received $135,000 in state funding to design and implement a new industry-led training program, with free tuition and credits.

Anyone with a high school diploma is eligible to enroll. Space is limited to 25 people. Classes begin Sept. 6 and run for 16 weeks on Thursdays and Fridays. The deadline to apply is Aug. 15.
