Air Products has unveiled its plans for the future of its global headquarters and it's not far from its existing Trexlertown campus.

The global gas producer announced this morning that it will build a new campus on a 50-acre tract of land at the southeast intersection of Mill Creek Road and the Route 222 Bypass in Upper Macungie Township.

The land is about one mile from its existing campus.

Construction is expected to begin next March with occupancy targeted for summer 2021.

The new headquarters site will include administration offices and a research and development facility. The company also will build an enclosed parking structure for employees.

The new campus will house about 2,000 local Air Products employees and has the capacity for growth.

“From the beginning of this process to develop a new headquarters facility, we have never wavered in our commitment to remain in the Lehigh Valley,” president and CEO Seifi Ghasemi said in a statement. “Now, we have made the location decision and we begin our preparations to build facilities that represent our world-class company,”

During construction, Air Products’ headquarters will remain at its existing location at 7201 Hamilton Blvd. in the Trexlertown section of Upper Macungie Township.

After it moves operations to the new facilities, the 235-acre property will be put up for sale, the company said.

Ghasemi said the campus was aging and had more space than the company needed after it divested its materials division into Versum Materials, now headquartered in Arizona.

He estimated that maintenance costs at the 60-year old Air Products campus were around $20 million a year.

He did not disclose the purchase price for the land for the new campus.
