St. Luke's University Hospital's trauma center in Fountain Hill recently renovated its trauma bay, part of an ongoing $1.1 million project to expand and improve the emergency department.

Officials reopened the $550,000 renovated trauma bay Friday after Boyle Construction of South Whitehall Township completed that portion of the project in 10 days.

The overall renovation of the department will include a new waiting area, three-bed behavioral health pod, additional patient room, new emergency medical services room and a new vestibule entryway.

The trauma center has adult, level one status, which means it can care for adult patients with major traumatic injuries. It sees more than 3,000 patients a year.

The center is marking its 20th anniversary this year.
