Not one, but two Pocono resorts are in the running for the title of Best Indoor Waterpark in this year’s USA Today People’s Choice Awards – Aquatopia at Camelback and the waterpark at Kalahari Resorts.
Aquatopia at Camelback Resort in Tannersville was the winner of the vote-based contest when it opened in 2015.
Kelly Jaffe, Camelback’s marketing manager, said the early accolades were a real shot in the arm for the attraction.
“It was a really big deal for us,” Jaffe said. “We use that title in our marketing – ‘Voted No. 1 in 2015 by USA Today.’ We still use it today.”
Of course, she said, staff wants to see the park take home the national title for a second time.
It has local competition from Kalahari Resorts & Conventions-Poconos in Tobyhanna Township.
At 220,000 square feet, the indoor waterpark at Kalahari is the largest indoor waterpark in the country
Aquatopia boasts 125,000 square feet of water adventure, featuring seven pools, including a wave pool. There also are 13 slides, an adventure river and a water play structure with nearly 100 gadgets.
At last check, Aquatopia was second place in the voting, with a Tennessee indoor waterpark, Wilderness at the Smokie, leading the pack. Kalahari’s indoor waterpark is No. 11 of the 20 nominees.
The winner is the one with the most votes. Voting continues through June 15.
