The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has awarded nearly $1 million in grants to support the state’s wine industry.

The grants, which total $999,989, are being shared between seven projects that hope to develop and promote Pennsylvania wines.

“Winemaking continues to be an important, growing business in the commonwealth,” said PLCB Chairman Tim Holden.

He noted that the wine industry contributes $4.8 billion annually to the state’s economy.

The largest grant recipient was the Pennsylvania Winery Association, which received $519,500 for its Pennsylvania Wine Land Statewide Marketing & Promotions, which includes promoting October as “Wine Month” and wine trails in the state, including ones in the Greater Lehigh Valley.

Grants also were given to research projects, including alternative weed and pest control options and even the effect that peppery aromas have on consumers of certain varieties of wine.

Act 39 of 2016 authorized the PLCB to approve up to $1 million annually for wine promotion. The first round of grants – a total of $999,934 for 13 projects – was issued by the PLCB in May 2017.

Act 39 also created the Pennsylvania Malt and Brewed Beverages Industry Promotion Board and authorized the PLCB to approve and fund up to $1 million annually for development and marketing of the Pennsylvania beer industry.

In February, the PLCB awarded the inaugural round of grants supporting Pennsylvania’s beer industry, with $705,000 in grants split between 13 projects.
