For the third time since it was established in 2012, Azzur Labs in Schnecksville has expanded.
Kym Faylor, president of Azzur Labs, said the analytical laboratory renovated existing space and converted an unused area into lab space to bring Azzur up to 6,200 square feet of laboratory space.
Faylor said the expansion is needed, in part, because of new hazardous drug residue-testing regulations, which will require hospitals to swab areas where high potency drugs – such as those used in chemotherapy – are used to ensure there is no contamination.
Azzur will be able to analyze those swabs.
Altogether, the company added an instrumental chem lab, calibration, water chem and wet chem labs to the new space.
The expansion will mean more employees, Faylor said.
The number of people hired will depend on the amount and scope of new work that Azzur will receive from the new regulation and its new capabilities.
However, the company has already made one new hire. Chris Morgan was hired as the lab’s chemistry director this year, and Azzur is hiring for a quality assurance position.
Faylor said she expects to make full use of the new space.
“There’s a need for it in the Lehigh Valley,” she said. She noted that the Lehigh Valley’s key location in the Northeast and the number of pharmaceutical companies in the region create a great deal of demand for the work that Azzur does.
Azzur Labs was recently named to the Inc. 500 Fastest Growing Companies list, and Faylor has been recognized by Lehigh Valley Business as a Woman of Influence.
