Lehigh University in Bethlehem and Air Products in Trexlertown are hosting a tour that is focusing on the issue of diversity and inclusion in the workforce.
“Check Your Blind Spots,” is an initiative of a CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion, a national organization of CEOs committed to advancing inclusion.
The mobile, interactive tour is visiting corporate offices and college campuses throughout the country to help students and employees learn how to address and manage their unconscious biases.
The tour is being held today through 4 p.m. at Lehigh University at 27 Memorial Drive for students, staff and faculty; and Thursday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Air Products at 7201 Hamilton Blvd. in Trexlertown for its employees.
Both are open to the public, said Jenna Walsh of CEO Action. For information, visit www.ceoaction.com.
Henry Odi, deputy vice president for equity and community and associate provost for academic diversity at Lehigh, said Lehigh and Air Products are members of the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion organization and brought the tour to their locations to help people understand their own unconscious biases and what to do about them.
“We’re all guilty of it, regardless of who we are,” Odi said. “When you can spot those biases, you can do something about them.”
He said it could be simply that a person grew up in an area without a lot of diversity and is unsure of how to interact in a more diverse environment.
During the tour, participants are taken through a video experience where they overhear conversations that happen in the real world.
The goal is to reveal society’s biases and, ultimately, those of the participants.
The experience is designed to give people the knowledge and resources they need to help address pre-existing biases and better understand their role in advancing diversity and inclusion.
