We all know that keeping a business healthy is imperative for success, and the same goes for our own personal fitness.
Staying in shape enhances quality of life, and having a positive outlook and good health go hand-in-hand in boosting incentive to achieve better results, which can in turn affect your business.
Throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley there are gyms and fitness centers aligned to your specific needs, and one in Wyomissing has it all: Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex on Papermill Road.
Body Zone offers a multitude of services, and here to answer this week’s “Behind the List” questions is its founder and general manager Ted Kolva.

Lehigh Valley Business: How long has Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex been operating in the region and what are its primary services?
Ted Kolva: Body Zone opened its doors in 2002. Our 160,000-square-foot facility in Wyomissing houses an award-winning and state-of-the-art fitness and aquatics centers, Body Zone Physical Therapy, suspended running track, two NHL-sized ice rinks, two Sprinturf synthetic grass sports fields, basketball/volleyball court and cafe.
From physical therapy, swim lessons and personal training, to sports leagues and instruction and public ice skating or pickleball, we have something to keep every member of the family moving and healthy.
LVB: How does Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex get involved with the local business community? Does it reach out and work directly with businesses to offer employee wellness programs? If so, what kind of programs does it offer and what are some its greatest accomplishments in offering such programs?
Kolva: Not only do local businesses get involved as sponsors through our community partners program, we also collaborate with them to provide corporate wellness programming for their employees consisting of special membership rates as well as customized programming that integrates exercise, disease prevention and holistic self-care into corporate culture.
Our new partnership with Power Kunkle Wellness Matters will allow us to expand our offerings (such as biometric testing) and to widen our reach in terms of clientele.
LVB: There are several franchised fitness centers and gyms throughout the Greater Lehigh Valley/Reading areas. How does Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex position itself to stay ahead of the competition? What incentives does it offer its current and prospective members?
Kolva: We made a marked difference in our wellness services offerings by opening Body Zone Physical Therapy in January 2017. It provides our members, participants in our sports programs and the general public with an unparalleled opportunity to be healthy all under one roof.
Around the same time, we rolled out MyZone interactive heart rate technology and InBody Body Composition, a medical grade device, to support and empower our 5,000 members.
Our new member onboarding is unparalleled in town. We have a full-time staff of 30 and a part-time staff of 190 who make sure your first year at Body Zone is both engaging and allows members to reach their wellness goals.
Even better, we entice new members with the reward of earning up to 25-50 percent off their monthly membership if they check in and work out 12-15 times per month as part of our health partners membership plan.
We have 125 weekly classes in our four studios and pool, running track and more. We are already quite distinctive.
LVB: Does Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex participate in, or with, any trade show events, youth organizations or other marketing outlets? How does it actively get involved with and deliver its brand to the community?
Kolva: We take immense pride in supporting our community. It is a privilege to be located in Berks County, and we are devoted to supporting local organizations that foster growth and inspire change.
We support Girls on the Run Berks County and countless other organizations that play an instrumental role in promoting health and wellness in every corner of Berks County. We also promote the volunteer efforts of our staff members and give back to their nonprofits, school districts, little leagues and more.
Since 2002, we have been the practice and workout home to Reading Royals, Reading Fightin Phils and the Reading United. We also communicate our wide variety of programs and special events to the more than 500,000 guests passing through our doors every year – they are our best supporters.
LVB: What does the future look like for Body Zone Sports and Wellness Complex? Does it have plans for growth?
Kolva: Body Zone plans to continue to grow in all aspects of our business as we move forward. Grass roots efforts continue to be our most effective way to grow our youth and sports instructional programs by offering in-house sessions for all ages.
In wellness and aquatics, we constantly strive to grow our membership base through retention (nearly 70 percent) and by staying on the cutting edge of all the fitness trends and by offering the area’s most comprehensive swim lessons and lifeguard certification classes.
