After briefly awarding Pennsylvania’s fourth Category 4 casino to the operator of the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board has instead awarded the license to the operator of the Parx Casino in Bensalem, Bucks County.

The Sands Bethworks Gaming LLC originally won the license with a $9.9 million bid Wednesday.

Later that day, however, Kevin O’Toole, executive director of the board, invalidated the bid after determining that the Mercer County location where Sands planned the mini-casino was too close to the Lawrence County casino that already had been awarded to Mount Airy No. 1 LLC, the operator of Mount Airy Casino Resort in Paradise Township.

Both counties are in western Pennsylvania near the Ohio border.

Greenwood Gaming and Entertainment Inc., which has now been awarded the license, bid $8.1 million to locate a Category 4 casino in Cumberland County.

The license allows Greenwood to operate 300 to 750 slot machines in the approved location. It can also apply – for an additional fee – for up to 30 table games and then up to 10 more after its first year of operation.

The state will be licensing a total of 10 Category 4 casinos across the state.

The next bid is scheduled in two weeks.

According to board spokesman Dough Harbaugh, the Sands is able to bid for any of the remaining licenses when they are put to auction.
