Silgan Containers, a California-based company that describes itself as the largest provider of metal food packaging in the U.S., will be opening a manufacturing facility in Upper Macungie Township, creating 29 jobs.

This is the company’s first manufacturing location in Pennsylvania. It has a sales office in King of Prussia.

According to a press release from Gov. Tom Wolf, the company is investing $15 million into the project, which will include the purchase of equipment and the training of its employees.

To assist in the plan, Silgan received a funding proposal from the Department of Community & Economic Development that includes a $120,000 Pennsylvania First grant, a $13,050 WEDnet grant for employee training, and $87,000 in Job Creation Tax Credits to be issued after the new jobs are created.

Don Cunningham, president and CEO of the Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corp. said because of its size and predominance in the food and beverage packaging industry, Silgan was a target for local economic development officials.

“We have quite a nice cluster of food and beverage manufacturers here in the Lehigh Valley,” he said

"The Silgan Containers development in the Lehigh Valley is an example of the synergy of how manufacturing and product distribution grow together," Cunningham said. "Silgan and its product is an important part of the supply chain of Nestle Purina and other products being made and distributed from the Lehigh Valley."

He said Silgan’s decision to locate a facility near a core of its customers is similar to one made a few years ago when Westport Axle relocated its heavy axle manufacturing to Lehigh County to be close to Mack Trucks, its largest customer

The governor’s press release did not include a location for the facility, but Silgan’s website indicates a facility at 8201 Industrial Blvd. in the Breinigsville section of Upper Macungie Township.
