Indie Award doesn’t go to either Lehigh Valley finalist

By ,

Two Lehigh Valley businesses made the finals, but in the end it was a Massachusetts hardware store that took home the “Indie Award” and its accompanying $50,000 in prizes.

Both Ju-Ju Monkey, a children and baby goods retailer in Allentown, and Let’s Play Books, an Emmaus bookstore, made the top 10 finalists based on online votes in the competition, which was sponsored by the Virginia Beach-based organization Independent We Stand.

The purpose of the Indie Award was to promote the good that small, independently owned businesses do in the community.

“This year’s winner exhibits the spirit of what makes independent businesses special — a focus on both customer service and the community,” said Bill Brunelle, co-founder of Independent We Stand. “Carr Hardware garnered support through its mission to serve customers and the community by choosing a pay-it-forward approach with the prize winnings. The $5,000 cash prize will help pay for a splash pad at a community park.”

The prize package came with money for the business, a local business development organization and funds to bolster a company’s marketing efforts.
