Whitehall Township has a new Aldi grocery store.
The discount grocery chain cut the ribbon Thursday on a new location at 2540 MacArthur Road, replacing the Whitehall store near the Allentown border at 1101 MacArthur Road. That was one of the older Aldi stores in the Lehigh Valley.
The old store closed at noon Wednesday.
The new store will feature a more modern design and will focus on fresh items, including produce, dairy and bakery sections.
New Aldi stores also feature open ceilings, natural lighting and environmentally friendly building materials, such as recycled materials, energy-saving refrigeration and light-emitting diode lighting.
This year, German-based Aldi announced an aggressive plan to ramp up U.S. expansion with a goal of 2,500 stores by the end of 2022.
The new store in Whitehall was among those announced stores.
As part of its accelerated growth and expansion, ALDI plans to add 25,000 new jobs in stores, warehouses and offices nationwide.
With that growth, Aldi said, it will be the third largest grocery store by count in the U.S. and serve 100 million customers per month.
