Managing a business takes hard work, dedication and passion.
No one knows that more than operators of small businesses, the backbone of America’s economy who make up the majority of its workforce.
Women have become a big part of that backbone, running all kinds of businesses from big to small.
Ellyn G. Elstein of Creative Closets LTD in Upper Macungie Township is one of those women, and she’s here to answer this week’s “Behind the List” questions and talk about her business.
Lehigh Valley Business: How long has Creative Closets LTD been operating in the region and what are its primary services?
Ellyn G. Elstein: We are in our 34th year. We started in November 1983. We install closets, laundry rooms, garage systems, wine cellars, dressing rooms, attic spaces, kids’ areas, home offices and professional offices, bath accessories, mirrors and shower doors.
LVB: What have been some of the biggest challenges and opportunities that Creative Closets LTD has encountered throughout its years in business?
Elstein: Opportunities are open to every person who has an office, garage, closet or pantry.
We work with 45 builders and contractors, which gives us the opportunity to offer services to each of their homeowners.
We also donate about 150 silent auction gift certificates each year so that we are helping nonprofit organizations raise money, and thus we have the opportunity to reach everyone attending those functions.
[The period of] 2008-12 was a tremendous challenge. The period of decreased construction was quite a challenge for our company.
We survived and are now growing by leaps and bounds.
LVB: Is Creative Closets LTD certified as a Women’s Business Enterprise? What are some of the perks of being a woman-owned business?
Elstein: Yes, we are. The perks are the increased opportunities to bid on commercial work.
LVB: Does Creative Closets LTD provide its services solely in the Greater Lehigh Valley or does it expand into other markets?
Elstein: Creative Closets offers customized projects within an 80-mile radius of Allentown. We do work in central New Jersey, Wilkes-Barre, Reading, the Poconos and toward Philadelphia.
LVB: What does the future look like for Creative Closets LTD? Does it have plans for growth?
Elstein: Our growth is quite positive. We plan on hiring additional designers, installers and another person to work on charitable projects. We expect to expand further in the charitable projects area.
